Mike KEPPELL, Professor of Higher Education & Director, The Flexible Learning Institute, Charles Sturt University
- “I have worked with Philip for over a year in my capacity as Sub dean Learning & Teaching in the Faculty of Science, Charles Sturt University (CSU). Philip is a great communicator and I have found him one of the most responsive people in the University to my many questions posed on behalf of staff in my Faculty. Philip has been a very enthusiastic mentor and facilitator to enable CSU staff to share their developments in information and communication technologies (ICT) that enhance student learning and takes the stress out of using new technologies. With 20,000 of our 30,000 students studying by distance education the proper selection and use of ICT provides a very important avenue for providing the best for our students both on and off campus. Among the many things Philip does is organise and coordinate our cross-campus on-line Forums of the ICT-enabled learning Community of Practice (“show and tell sessions”). These have proved very successful. In one session what really brought it home to me that when you use the technology to good effect then sharing across campuses can be amazingly seamless was spontaneous applause from at least five different locations after a session and it felt like we were all together in the same room. Philip made this possible! Amazing! Another really useful introduction has been Philip’s introduction of Yammer (www.yammer.com) as CSU’s micro-blogging tool. I have found this a fantastic way to find out important information to then share with my Faculty and other Subdeans. I have asked questions on Yammer that have been answered within 5 minutes. I really don't know how I could have easily found the answers I required so quickly. These are only the 'tip of the iceberg'!” January 4, 2010
John Harper, Sub dean Learning & Teaching in the Faculty of Science, Charles Sturt University
